The gist

A student ate a raw Cheongyang chili to fight sleep, then cried so hard a stranger intervened.

Cheongyang chili at the library

I brought one, right? To eat and wake up when I got sleepy.. I got so sleepy I went to the lounge and put the whole thing in my mouth in one bite, and thirty minutes later I still can't calm down, just leaking tears and snot.. From now on I'll live like a sensible person ㅠ들고왔거든?

I feel like I'm dying ㅠㅠ People in the lounge seemed to think I was having a seizure, so I went and cried in a bathroom stall — and someone left chocolate outside the door with a note saying 'No matter how hard it gets, don't give up. I'm rooting for you' ㅠㅠㅠㅠㅠ

💡 Why is this funny?
The tears were pure capsaicin, but in a study room during exam season, sobbing in a stall reads as a breakdown. A stranger left snacks and encouragement for a crisis that was entirely chili-based.vs. the US: a Post-it on your carrel saying "you got this."
💡 Why the pepper?
Cheongyang peppers are Korea's standard hot chili, eaten raw with meals — but a whole one in one bite is a self-inflicted stunt. All-day study-room culture breeds desperate anti-nap hacks.vs. the US: chugging an energy drink, minus 30 minutes of streaming eyes.
