A Blind user says guests giving just 100,000 won at weddings now have "no conscience."

After buffet prices rose to 80,000 won a head, one poster vented that the standard wedding cash gift of 100,000 won barely leaves anything for the couple — and put it to a vote.

English translation
OP: wedding buffets cost 80k now, so 100k gift money is shameless. Poll: 96% said 'don't blame us for your pricey venue — 100k is standard.'

💡 Wait, why is there a poll about gift money at all?
축의금 (chugeuigeum) is cash you're expected to bring to any wedding you attend, and there are unspoken tiers — 50k/70k/100k won — depending on how close you are to the couple. The debate here is whether that fixed amount should scale with how fancy the buffet is.vs. the US: like the 'cover your plate cost' rule at weddings, but Korea has actual nationwide standard amounts instead of vague etiquette.Klore note
💡 What's this "국룰" thing the top comment uses?
국룰 literally means 'national rule' — internet slang for an unwritten convention everyone's just supposed to know, used here to shut down the complaint by saying 100k is simply the agreed-upon default no matter the venue.vs. Reddit: functions like citing 'unwritten house rules' in a subreddit — no one voted on it, but breaking it gets you dragged.Klore note

Since when is the wedding gift supposed to match YOUR budget?

What are you even saying, buffet's 80k so people give 100k. If it was 40k they'd give 50k. Closer friends already give more.

Running a business or what? Should be thanking guests for showing up, maybe even giving them travel money instead lol

100k is fine, they don't even tell you the buffet price beforehand. Plus if the couple has good relationships, guests naturally give more anyway.

People at wedding buffets usually just eat a reasonable amount anyway

The buffet price is the rip-off, why ask everyone to split the cost of that

Hosts should throw weddings within their means. But when you're broke yet want the fancy stuff, thinking 'gift money will cover it,' that's when this weird logic of guests paying their own meal cost starts.

Gift money is just gift money, not your jackpot life-changing chance... and definitely not meant to cover your over-the-top luxury wedding
